Journey to Gibraltar by The Beanland Family

I finally got this book ready! Just in time to celebrate my father's Birthday on the 14th November.

Happy Birthday, Dad!

I have spent many months writing up all of the letters in this edition, and probably started working on it back in 2015! I definitely lost track of time...

The only reason I finally got it done was since this year, 2017, marks 150 years since the arrival of the first Beanlands on the Rock of Gibraltar, and I realised that after doing all the hard work I had to invest the time for the final leg of this journey to include the photos, edit, etc.

I am proud of my past and hope many from the North of England and Gibraltar find the letters left behind by my relatives of interest.

Thank you for taking a look & please share with anyone that might enjoy a window to the past.
Vanessa

The discovery of letters, diaries and a memoir, whilst clearing out the Beanland home in 1997, led to family secrets being revealed, giving us a window into the world of the 19th Century.

Bolton Beanland, born in Colne, Lancashire, leaves a life in the mills at the age of 18 to join the army as a Gunner and through his accounts we find out what it was like to be in service during 1861. Via numerous letters, mentioning events such as the death of the Prince Consort in 1862, during his time in Woolwich, and the conflict in Jamaica in 1865, we discover the life of a soldier during testing circumstances.

His marriage to Emma Saword, in Jamaica, in 1865, and subsequent posting to Gibraltar in 1867 are celebrated, in this publication, by the Beanland family in Gibraltar to mark 150 years since their ancestors' arrival on The Rock.

However, tragic circumstances befall the family and are described by letters written by his wife and brother, Emmett. In addition, Bolton's daughter, Harriett, brings these years to life in a vivid and beautifully written memoir.

Two dairies written by Bolton's youngest son, Charles, also recall life in Gibraltar during 1889 and life in England during 1895, when he visited his relatives in Lancashire and London.

We then get a glimpse of the Second World War in Gibraltar, through the eyes of Albert, the son of Charles, in 1942, and his warm views of his father on his passing in 1851.

Finally, recollections from Bolton's great grandson, Malcolm Beanland.

By meticulously reviving these accounts and the addition of numerous photographs, Malcolm and his daughter, V. J. Beanland, have managed to bring to life family history that would otherwise have been forgotten or lost again in time. Delve into the past and read accounts that were never intended for this world-wide audience.

Walk the Wight #IsleofWight

Today, I walked the 4 mile Schools Walk with my 7 year old daughter to support the Mountbatten Hospice. We had already walked the 26 miles over the past month getting a sticker for each 30 mins. It was a great incentive to keep her going...

My husband & 13 year old son walked the entire distance of over 26 miles. My 12 year old daughter did about 15 miles!

My new walking boots caused me some problems, but the pain is nothing compared to the work this wonderful charity does.

If you are inspired by any of the stories and by our walking please donate to the Mountbatten Hospice now via their website => CLICK HERE OR Facebook Page

Every Cloud has a Silver Lining

Well, 2015 is over half-way up and now that my children are all back at school I can reflect and decide what I want to achieve this year.

I have not published anything new in a while, mainly because I am working on a bigger project, and family life has taken over as you can see from the lack of blogs, etc. I also think that Social Media is not as exciting as it once was... (yep, the phrase "in the good old days" seems relevant).

I am guilty of the crime many others commit. I check what's going on and then leave. I barely have time for much conversation. It has become part of normal life to check on my emails, Twitter, Facebook, etc. When I started using them it was exciting. The possibilities seemed endless. Yet, as much as I love seeing the updates of my friends, family, and "connections" it seems empty if you don't actually talk to people.

Talking? What is that I hear you ask.

This is why I love books and reading. I can escape into a different world without any expectations other than those I seek. If I don't enjoy the story I leave it... especially when it's a freebie download via my kindle!

We all take what we want from this life.

I have just bought two very interesting books...

HUMAN UNIVERSE

SAPIENS

I guess it is part of who I am that I want to know about my past and what makes me human. To try to understand why I am so irrational!

My interest in Science and Evolution should come as no surprise since I have written a paranormal novel based on the idea of a new evolutionary species. I am also working on a historical fiction novel, which has enabled me to analyse me ancestral past and how it potentially shaped me.

I wonder why we all strive to overachieve and, if we fail to do so, why we feel like a huge disappointment?

I feel like I am failing because I have not published a book since 2013, but I know that I have never been happier as a person. I love my family and feel truly blessed in many ways. This week I have also had some fantastic news which will put my fragmented jigsaw puzzle of a life back together again.

So, we should all try to maintain some patience. Life is not a race it is a journey. I love the expression "Every Cloud has a Silver Lining"... so, so true.

I hope things that happen to bring you down get offset by something to make you smile. Let's remember to pick up that phone, meet up, and talk to people. It's so easy to lead a hermit life. I know.

Anyway, to all my Gibraltarian friends & family - HAPPY NATIONAL DAY! Everyone will be in red & white today on the Rock! Have fun...

All the best,
Vanessa

50,000 VIEWS! Thank you to all... #VWAuthor

I just realised that my blog has been viewed 50,000 times!

This is another milestone in my epic journey from stay-at-home mum to writer (& social media obsessive!)

Five years ago, I decided to write for fun. I needed to let my mind go crazy and talking to myself was not very healthy!

One of my creations!
I am fortunate and lucky to be able to spend time with my children, whilst entertaining hobbies! I keep busy though... at the moment, I volunteer at the local Foodbank, help out with reading at my daughter's school, work during lunchtimes in a supervisory role, home tutor, read, and when I have time... write!

It seems apt to have reached 50,000 views when I am so close to 50,000 words on my new novel. A labour of love, I think. I also have 50 reviews for HYBRID via Amazon UK! So, fifty is a great number...

To anyone who has a dream, follow it. Whatever happens, never be the one that looks back on their life and wonder where it went and regrets decisions made. Even if things do not end up as you hoped, make the most of it.

This is what I try to do.

I may not be the career-driver business woman I thought I wanted to be when I was twenty, but I am happy. The simplest things are the best.

Thank you all for your support & encouragement.

All the best,
Vanessa

p.s. Look what someone wrote via Facebook today. It made my day!

"Hi, I read the Evolution Trilogy recently and it was great. I wonder will you write the epilogue book of Caitlin and Steve as the fourth book?"

Well, in answer to that, I never say never.

Wedding Anniversary

Today is my Wedding Anniversary - 14 years married and nearly 19 years together!

In those years, I have lived in Gibraltar, Southampton, Reading, Rotterdam, Twickenham, Kingston (U.K.) Watford, Hatfield, back to Rotterdam, and finally the Isle of Wight!

I also finished my degree, started work as a trainee accountant, then worked in HR, as a Procurement analyst, then re-trained as a maths teacher, became a mum to three wonderful children (hardest job ever), did bookkeeping for voluntary organisations, started teaching swimming, and then became an author...

All the places and jobs have molded me into the person I am today, but to be honest I still think I have so much to learn. I also look forward to watching my three lovely children become adults, and start another journey of their own.

Marriage or being in a relationship is not always easy, but when you overcome the hurdles you feel like you are on top of the world. Mutual respect, encouragement, patience, understanding, and ultimately love are the key ingredients. Nothing is ever sugar-coated all the time.

I look forward to continuing my journey with my family... and wonder what I will have to add in another ten years!

Have a fantastic day,
Vanessa :)

p.s. Look what I got...

I can SKI... You can learn something new every day!

Since I was raised in Gibraltar my experience of snow and skiing was limited... i.e. non-existent. I remember the first time I saw snow when I moved to England.  It was pretty, and well COLD! And you got all this slush on the ground after the snow fell... Not good! I was not impressed!

Over the years, we have contemplated a skiing family holiday and I have come up with excuses... the kids are too young, its too expensive, etc etc... but I was (if I'm honest) scared...

I did try skiing on a dry ski slope a few years back and enjoyed it but my legs died - agony!

Since then I have improved! :)

By walking a lot over the past year and the fact I have lost a lot of weight (as I have mentioned before) it was great to NOT die for a change when we went skiing in Switzerland. Saying that, the experience was made easy for us. We stayed with my lovely in-laws and had a fantastic time! They picked us up from the airport, made us welcome in their fantastic apartment, booked the skiing lessons, drove us to the slopes... Like WOW!

Anyway, I have some pictures to share... the ski gear is not flattering! How to put back on a stone via clothing! Ha ha

Firstly, my children & me before we ventured out into the world of skiing...

We started badly! None of us could get hold of the pully thing and did spectacular falls! Oh well... but I got the hang of it and progressed to do a great pizza!

I was so confident that I asked to go to the bigger slope... oh YES - bring it ON!

I did manage it, but did have a massive crash on the second day - but I survived - the white stuff does not hurt (lucky that...)

Unfortunately, I did manage to fall a few times - watch out for the huge BUTT! Ha ha ha

My daughter also managed to tackle to larger slope (my son got a red card and got sent back (he was not happy...lol) for crashing into his sister.

And my youngest let us steer her along... she prefered my husband to help!  Although she really, really enjoyed pulling the sledge!

So all in all a great experience.

I leave you a picture of the view... breathtaking, isn't it! I know, I know... I am a lucky, lucky thing...

Let me know what you think,
Vanessa :) xx
