7 FACTS ABOUT ME (oh, come on, don't yawn already...)

I was born and raised in Gibraltar and am bilingual (English and Spanish). Until the age of eight, I lived behind a closed border and only knew the 2.5 square miles known as "The Rock"... according to my distant cousin, when I was about 5 she visited and told me she had been in Spain. I asked where that was and she pointed across the straits of Gibraltar and said, "There!" Ha ha... it was right in front of me!

I am a jack of all trades, master of none (or many - who knows?). I have worked as a trainee accountant, secondary school mathematics teacher, swimming teacher, and now am a self-published "indie" author and stay-at-home mum! Most the time I have no idea what I want to do in life... can't I try it all?

Hey there... I sometimes sell books!

I LOVE to read books that make me feel some sort of emotion... I want to connect with the characters, feel for them, cry, get excited by what they do, mull over the predicaments!

My favourite novelists are both men and women! I love fiction laced with a romantic undertone. Ken Follett, Jane Austen, Jeffrey Archer, Sarra Manning, Leon Uris, Stephenie Meyer, J.K. Rowling (NOT The Casual Vacancy!), etc...

I am constantly fighting to keep in shape and have ranged from a size 8 to 16! At my height of 5 foot, 1 inch... I need to watch what I do!

I enjoy exercise - my favourites being walking and swimming! I swam for Gibraltar when I was 14 years old!

***MY WRITING PROCESS***

I have not been on many Blog Tours, so I do not know how successful they are and whether readers actually follow the hop… I guess the amount of comments I get on this post will be my answer. This is a way for people to find new authors and genres via authors they currently read and follow – sounds like a good plan to me.

So, here goes… welcome to my post on the ‘Writer’s Blog Tour’. I was invited by an author I know very well since she submitted stories to two of the charity anthologies I have published, OUT OF DARKNESS and A TEST OF TIME.

MY WRITING PROCESS

What am I currently working on?

I am currently writing a historical fiction novel based on the life of my great, great, great grandparents who were born in 1841 & 1837 in Burnley & Liverpool, Lancashire, England!

I also have few other novels partially written & glaring at me for ignoring them… mainly romantic fiction, although one is for children! Whether they ever see the light of day is another matter - too many ideas, too little time J

How does my work differ from others in its genre?

I have not read a book like the one I am writing so I figure that makes it unique. Also, it is going to be based on a true untold story and therefore can’t overlap with many others.

Why do I write what I do?

This is a good question, but personally I prefer to think of it as why do I write at all? The answer to this (for me at least) is pure escapism. The ability to create a world that is all mine is slightly selfish. It allows me to leave reality and pretend I am someone else. 

The range of topics and characters come about from things I am passionate about (for example, relationships & history), as well as the exploration of science and supernatural powers - I always wanted to be Spiderwoman as a child!

How does my writing process work?

Again, a valid question… the problem is, do I have a process?

Personally, I just have an idea… I sit down and write it. As the story unfolds and develops, I start to make notes to ensure what I am doing works. I rarely plan ahead and know what I am going to write, although for my latest project I do actually know what happens since it is based on truth. So, this time I have an outline, but the way the characters interact and develop happens as I write.

I am still a relatively new writer since I only started in 2010, after a break of nearly twenty years since I sat my English exams! I have not attended many courses or been told how to write… I just do. It works for me, and it does not hold back my creativity.

Once the story is written, then the work really begins. I check it a LOT of times for errors, plot & character consistency, grammar, formatting issues, etc… then I send it to some trusted proof-readers and beta readers. The process repeats after I get their feedback.

I also find it helps to not read it for a month after completion, and then look at it with a fresh pair of eyes to make sure I am happy with the different settings.

It all takes time, but what’s the rush?

As an indie author, I have done most of the work myself. After completion, I have to sort out the formatting for the print version separately and the covers. It takes ages! Read my full story HERE. Maybe one day I’ll get snapped up by an agent & publisher? I am allowed to dream…

Gary Henson was born in Levelland, Texas, among the dust storms, tumbleweeds, swamp coolers, cattle ranches and oil fields.  His family moved to Boulder, Colorado in the mid 60’s and yes, he does remember it.  He joined the US Nuclear Navy at 17, married his lovely, childhood sweetheart, Debbie, and then ‘saw the world’ for 9 years.  It was a somewhat oddly shaped world; seen through the periscope lens of a submarine.  He was also a software developer for over thirty years.

Storytelling is an everyday part of his life.  He has a tiny, but insistent, muse sitting on his shoulder always feeding him new and sometimes ‘challenging’ ideas.  The good ones he tries to put to paper, the rest he tries to bury very, very deeply.

Gary enjoys reading and spoiling his granddaughters.

Michael J Holley writes comedy fiction. He is the author of Plaster Scene, The Great Corporate Escape and The Christmas Number One (and other Christmas Stories). He was born in Southampton, England in 1977, and since then has moved to Liverpool and Manchester, but now he lives in Cowes on the Isle of Wight with his wife and two children.

Having been the taller half of the rhythm section for the indie-rock band Aura4, Michael still enjoys listening to proper music and tinkering around on his guitars. He also loves watching and playing football, watching comedy, reading (of course) and drinking coffee.

His next full-length novel, Blind Faith, will be out in the summer of 2014.

VERY BRITISH BLOG TOUR

I now know what a Blog Tour is and it appears I have inadvertantly taken part already via The Booker Award & Leibster Awards I have been nominated for in the past ...

The VERY BRITISH BLOG TOUR was founded by Author Paul Anthony (@paulanthonyspen ) who mooted the idea to Clive Eaton ( @cliveeaton ) 

The idea is to use the same introduction and then answer the same questions on your blog/website as the author who nominated you, many of which have a specific British slant.  Then you invite 10 other authors to do the same.

Once you have filled ten spots, you feed further interested parties to those ten people, and so on. The more people involved the more exposure the tour will get, and so it then builds. Use the hash-tag #VBBT2013 as a means of identifying tweets, to then retweet.

Your page should also have links back to your sponsor, in my case Clive Eaton , and my nominee, Susan Buchanan 

Anything you can do to make the page look 'more British' the better... By the way, we British have certain conventions, traditions and procedures that are expected. There is a dress code in the reading of this British blog and you are expected to comply with it.

For example…

Gentlemen will wear suits, white shirts and dark ties. (Military ties are expected wherever possible). Ladies will wear dresses (one inch above the knee, no higher, no lower) and floral summer hats. On with the show...

Where were you born and where do you live at the moment?

 I am a Gibraltarian (from Gibraltar – a British colonial), who now lives on the Isle of Wight

Have you always lived and worked in Britain or are you based elsewhere at the moment?

 I grew up in Gibraltar, before I came to study in the University of Southampton when I was 18. I then worked in Reading as a VAT Consultant, before I changed career and moved to Twickenham to retrain as a Teacher of Mathematics.  I then lived in Kingston Upon Thames, Watford, Hatfield and Rotterdam (The Netherlands) before finally moving to the Island.

Which is your favourite part of Britain?

 I do love the Isle of Wight, but I have to admit that being by the River Thames was fantastic.  I also think the Peak District is beautiful.  I have also visited Wales & Scotland and have been impressed by the people, traditions and areas of beauty.  If I had to choose, I would say the Isle of Wight, purely because I love the sight of the sea, and you can’t escape it here.

Have you ‘highlighted’ or ‘showcased’ any particular part of Britain in your books? For example, a town or city; a county, a monument or some well-known place or event?

 HYBRID starts in the University of Southampton, and is based in Hampshire for the first half of the book.  In COMPLICATIONS my main characters take a journey from Southampton to Ilfracombe.

There is an illusion – or myth if you wish - about British people that I would like you to discuss. Many see the ‘Brits’ as ‘stiff upper lip’. Is that correct?

 Seeing as I am colonial British I can answer this from the point of view of a foreigner.  When I first arrived in England I could not believe how “cold” people appeared.  I remember crying due to home sickness and no-one coming to check on me.  When I asked why no-one had later on I was told it was best to leave me to it.  I could not believe it! In Gibraltar, my friends would have been there for me like a rash.

I have now adapted and have found that when you make friends they tend to be true ones.  The English (I can’t speak for others) tend to be slightly wary of strangers, they are not open books.  I now think this is a good thing.  I give away far too much of myself, it exposes me…

Do any of the characters in your books carry the ‘stiff upper lip’? Or are they all ‘British Bulldog’ and unique in their own way?

 My main character, Steven, comes from a privileged background.  But, he is level headed.  I met many “stiff upper lip” types in my first job and the accent meant nothing.  Most of the time they were the nicest, most chilled out and outgoing people I have ever met.  There advantage in life did not seem a disadvantage (if you know what I mean).

Tell us about one of your recent books

 COMPLICATIONS came out in November.  It is the second book in The Evolution Trilogy.

The Evolution Trilogy charts the journey taken by Steven Thorn when he discovers he is a member of the next evolutionary stage of mankind. The difference being that he is a Hybrid - half new breed, half human.

Throughout the Trilogy we meet and find out about this new community of individuals.  These special people have vampiric tendencies and are exceptional in many ways.  They are a family, they look out for each other, they keep to themselves, and they care for one another.  Generally, they stay away from humanity, but this is all set to change.

The next stage of evolution is complete, and the new members of humanity will come face to face with their ancestors.

 In HYBRID, Caitlin Chance and Steven Thorn's meet at University and fall in love at first sight. However, when Steven is discovered they are forced to separate. Steve is taken to the community and his fate is sealed. He is not normal and his choices are restricted. An accident will change this, his life is about to get complicated...

In COMPLICATIONS, Steven gets to know his grandparents and comes face to face with the reality of his mother's internal struggle. His mum, Emily, has a dark side that once exposed reveals her true nature. It turn out she is the main reason they can not live amongst humanity. However, when Steven manages to convince his grandparents to return to England, he is reunited with Caitlin, and then events take a further twist. It makes the return to the community imminent...

In RETURN (to be published in 2013) the future for the community, Caitlin and Steven is revealed...

What are you currently working on?

 RETURN, the final book in the Trilogy.

How do you spend your leisure time?

 If you mean REAL leisure time then it’s walking, reading, swimming and watching a movie.

 A global audience.

Decorating, Interview, Short Stories Collection, Leibster Award & THAT Movie...

It's been a while since I blogged on here... mainly because I have been busy... very busy!

For starters, I decided it was time to decorate the kids rooms and change things around. It sounds like such a simple thing... that it is NOT.  Everything had to come out of their rooms, especially in one that needed a new carpet, so we moved the kids around (my eldest daughter slept in different beds), until eventually three weeks later they have their own bedrooms - and they look great. The charity shops are thankful - I got rid of a LOT of stuff... phew!

Anyway, whilst I have been living in mayhem (with my bedroom resembling a dump site) I had to finalise the latest collection of short stories, LOVE IS IN THE AIR. Somehow, (best not to ask) I managed to get the formatting done, I also included links for everything this time and included a "Back to Table of Contents" link - it looks rather cool! I fixed a few formatting errors, and another author spotted a few grammatical issues within some stories... and finally, the eBook and the paperback were finalised!

I decided to interview James Smith (first time I interviewed anyone...), who actually published the eBook since he is raising money for Diabetes UK.

The best news is that I have finally got back into my Evolution Trilogy and am about a third of the way into the last book now, I have to say it is taking twists and turns I can not foresee - I LOVE IT! And so, I will try to stay focused and finish it in the next few months... when the real work will begin - EDITING...

I also managed to get nominated for the Leibster Award again (first time in 2013 though...) by Susan Buchanan - read the results here... WORDPRESS BLOG

I did manage to go to see the movie LES MISERABLES - follow the link for my full review and break down... I loved the musical - I have the soundtrack - and I loved the film. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I have several, this one is one of those ... anything goes! ha ha

No, I spend way to much time playing, and less time writing! Lol (But I do have a lot of fun...)

Watched an interview by Stephenie Meyer and thought I'd give it a go - I challenged myself to write a book (basically I was a bored stay at home mum)

4.    Have you published any book, if not do you plan to publish soon?

I have published two novels for my Evolution Trilogy, two collections of short stories (with other writers - join us?) and a short story based on a true experience.

5.    Define what success means to you as a writer?

At the moment "You don't have to say you lve me" by Sarra Manning. I love the way the main character finds love in a quirky, unbelievable and yet delicious manner.

7 Writers Challenge

I have been nominated for the 7 Writers challenge TWICE... thank you guys!

So, I will do 7 lines from each of my novels...

The idea of the 7 Writers Challenge...

Go to line 7 on either page 7 or page 77 of your manuscript and do a post with the next 7 lines, then tag 7 people to keep the challenge going.

First... PAGE 77 of HYBRID (THE EVOLUTION TRILOGY) 

‘It’s always entertaining,’ he smiled.

 

His smile sent her stomach off on more acrobatics.

 

Caitlin was having a silent discussion with herself.  Half of her was screaming at the fact he was asking her out.  The other side was saying he’s just being friendly.  Either way, she wanted to go with him. Her mood lifted and she replied, ‘That’d be great.’ Self consciously, she trailed, ‘I don’t know if I’d be good company at the moment.’

 

‘I promise not to talk about it. I’m not the gossiping type,’ he said, he leant in conspiratorially.

I was also nominated by Charlie Plunkett, author of ‘100 Little Words on Parenthood' (I happen to have added 100 little words of my own...lol)

Second... PAGE 77 of COMPLICATIONS (THE EVOLUTION TRILOGY) 

‘Oh no,’ Judith sighed, easing her arm into Jeff’s for support.

 

‘But, what,’ Jeff interrupted as he patted his wife’s arm. ‘What excuse could you possible have?  We trusted you.’

 

‘Look, I didn’t kill anyone.  I just …’

 

‘Just what?’ Jeff stressed, impatient. ‘If you drank someone’s blood you broke the rules. We should have been there. What happens if she behaves like that girl in Manaus?’

 

‘I’m sorry okay.  I know it was stupid.’
